Tainted Milk

Recent news headlines make nursing look more desirable. Over 6,200 infants in China (and a few other countries) are known to be ill from tainted formula. Over 12 suspects have been arrested, two of them being brothers who sold fresh milk used to produce contaminated baby milk powder. Their milk had been watered down and the chemical tripolycyanamide, also known as melamine, was added to fool quality checks by artificially producing high levels of protein.

So, they have been charged of producing and selling hazardous food, which could result in the death penalty. Apparently they had done it to recover costs lost when a factory rejected an earlier shipment of milk. Morality aside, I would certainally rather face having less money than the death sentence. Although, maybe they thought they couldn't survive without ... well who knows.
