Satire on Women Voting

Recently, I realized that I needed to transfer my voter's registration to my new address. I thought that I had checked a box on the internet to get a new voter's card when I changed my address online, but I guess I remembered wrong or something. So, as yesterday was the last day to register or change registration, I trudged over (well got dropped off in front of) to the Secretary of State and got everything all taken care of.

Lately I have been pondering voting and women's suffrage, and came across a satirical blog post about why women shouldn't vote: http://dbandmcq.blogspot.com/2008/07/repeal-19th-amendment-end-womens.html

The link gives 10 reasons why women shouldn't vote:
1. States Rights
2. Founders Beliefs
3. Governing Cultural Changes
4. Poor Decisions from Liberals
5. Historical
6. Liberal Conspiracy
7. Pro-life
8. Religion
9. Emotions
10.Non-safe Voting

The explanations for each reason seemed like something I could easily hear from a staunch conservative or from people a few decades ago. Some of them make me chuckle. Some of them are infuriating.

One thing that always seems to irk me is when comments are made about women being too emotional to make valid decisions. In Iran a woman is not allowed to testify in a court of law, because she is too emotional. This blog writer sarcastically quipped, "I would also like to point out that men use judgment while making life-altering important decisions that affect millions of people whereas women use emotion to make such judgment. Any decision of important matter should be thought out using evidence and reason, not feelings." I doubt the author of the article actually believes that, but the sad thing is there are people out there who do. Where do people get off saying things like that?

Truth be told I have known women who are more logical than some men. Now my husband is more logical than me in some ways, but he can also be more emotional. Furthermore, even though he is more logical, he is still quite forgetful and doesn't always remember all the facts (not to say that I don't forget anything). So, lets think for amount about situations where people might not be in married, or maybe not in a complementary relationship, or not employed by an employer etc. Hypothetically, if a guy has good logical skills but a poor memory, and a woman can recall facts but might not be as logical. Who wins out? The person with the facts or the person with the logic?
