Working for M.B.I., I have gotten countless comments from radio listeners about politics. It is one of the things that really rattles peoples' cages, especially the presidential election. Now people often don't know very much about politics or the news in general, but the presidential election is different. Few issues in the news get people so worked up all at the same time.
I get a lot of positive feedback, but here are some of the strong phrases that stood out:
"I have been crying all morning... I heard Pastor Cole say that neither men are evil men. I was amazed. I don’t think we should speak of evil of dignitaries, but we need to confront evil. By saying that he (Obama) is a good man, we are supporting his evil.”
“No one looks at the prospective that Obama is also a professing Christian. Janet Parshall pretty much said that if you were a Christian you would vote for McCain. [...] How dare they tell us how to vote if we are Christians and hold us hostage to the Republican party. I think that there are a lot of Christians out there that are Democratic.”
“Tell people not to vote for sin. Christians around the country need to know that abortion and homosexuality is sin. Obama supports homosexuality and abortion at any point in the pregnancy, but a lot of Christians are stupid and don’t realize this. You don’t have to name any names, because I know you might get in trouble because of tax laws. Just let people know clearly on the radio that we shouldn’t vote for someone who supports homosexuality and abortion.”
“I am really trying to get the African Americans to stop donating to Moody. I am going to do my best to make sure that nobody gives to Moody. I’ve been giving to Moody for 20 years, and I really thought that Moody was not like that. When you don’t speak, you have already spoken.”
“I am trying to become a Christian, and when I first started listening to the station I thought it was the station for me. Then I found out it is not a Christian station, but more a political station. I am so disappointed in this station. [...] My mom and I have decided we are not going to donate. I wish they would just shut the radio station down. They don’t talk like Christians. They talk like politicians. I don’t learn anything. As a black (from Jamaica), I am very disappointed.”
“Both candidates are extremely weak against defending the border against illegal immigrants. Gay illegal immigrants are coming into the US and influencing voters, as well as causing other havoc."
“If she [Sarah Palin] was home baking cookies, then her daughter might not be pregnant. Women are supposed to put their careers on hold for at least 20 years, and then come back. If this was 20 years ago, the radio programs would be saying she should stay home and bake cookies. No one on Christian radio is discussing this.”
“ I am not going to vote for a president on the issue of abortion. The president doesn’t have anything to do with the legislation about abortion.”
“If necessary I will stop my contributions, and turn off the radio, to show how upset I am by this. I have contacted the Obama camp and will contact the FCC I don’t think you should be delving into politics like this.”
I don't want to demean my fellow Christians, who are passionate about standing up for righteousness. Yet, I often wonder how a Christian is to do this in a manner worthy of Christ. Righteous anger is not sinful, but wrath is a sin. It is all too easy to get worked up in the heat of the moment and give illogical or shocking comments.
I also believe that as believers we should get upset about the things that upset the heart of God, but that doesn't mean we are to live in fear about the times around us. Here are a few biblical verses that are good to keep in mind:
Proverbs 21:1 - The king's heart is like channels of water in the hand of the Lord; He turns it wherever He wishes.
Romans 13:1-5 - Every person is to be in subjection to the governing authorities for there is no authority except from God, and those which exist are established by God. Therefore whoever resists authority has opposed the ordinance of Go; and they who have opposed will receive condemnation upon themselves. For rulers are not a cause of fear for good behavior, but for evil. [...]
I also think of a King Cyrus, a pagan king, in the OT who allowed a remnant of Israel to go back and build the temple. I am not trying to comment on whether any of our elected officials are Christian, but saying that either way God is still sovereign. Whatever happens in this world God will still be glorified, whether it is through people acting in righteousness or in rebellion that leads to destruction (as in Sodom & Gomorrah).
